BIRDS OF PARADISE

Colombia is renowned for its incredible avian diversity, a paradise for bird watchers and ornithologists alike. With ecosystems ranging from the Amazon rainforest to the Andean mountains, the country provides an ideal habitat for a vast array of bird species. As of January 2024, Colombia has recorded 1,968 species, cementing its status as the leader in avian biodiversity. The country's remarkable variety of birds, coupled with ongoing conservation efforts, ensures that it remains a premier destination for bird watchers and a crucial area for bird conservation. This year, as always, Colombia stands proudly at the forefront of global avian diversity, a true testament to its natural wealth and conservation commitment.

The sheer variety of bird species found here is a source of national pride and a treasure for the world. Colombia's leading position in bird diversity is not just a number; it is a reflection of the vibrant and dynamic ecosystems that thrive within its borders.

This year, with the 25 names chosen, CGLE would like to show a small selection of the birds that represent us in their diversity.

INNOVATION, QUALITY, AND TRADITION

We are faithful believers that through coffee, we can speak a different language. As Colombian producers of ultra-specialty high-altitude coffees, our combination of curiosity, scientific rationality, and obsession with coffee quality has allowed us to create unique milling protocols tailored to eight distinct microclimates in three mountain ranges in Colombia.

The development of specific protocols, alongside the selection of specific varieties and crop renovations, has enabled us to present these 25 unique lots.

FROM GREAT TO UNIQUE COFFEE

Our team has been working hard to develop the best practices to select each lot to ensure that we are able to offer the right quantity and quality.

The Selection

Over the years, we have studied our crops to identify disease-resistant varieties with special characteristics. We mark these special trees to harvest, process, and cup them separately. We select seeds from these trees to obtain pure varieties. From these pure lots, we identified areas with better production and quality, enabling us to select the best cherries for our auction lots.

FROM PLANTING TO PICKING

All the lots in this auction are from the highest altitude of our farms. We also take into account the age of the trees resulting in a quality difference. During the growing season, we considered the climatic amplitude (changes from cold phase to warm phase of this season of the year).

IN OUR LAB

After years of investigation, we identified the best processes to retain each coffee cultivar's main notes. We established different fermentation methods, especially for our auction lots. At our quality lab, each profile must have complex and unique notes. To ensure quality, our Q graders conducted over four cupping tables.

About
the Process

We have always developed our processes with an investigative approach, looking forward to results in quality, flavours, and singularity. We always start with two main questions:

  • What should this variety taste like?
  • How are we going to make our variety unique compared to other coffee growers?

TO OBTAIN THE BEST EXPRESSION OF THE PROFILE, WE HAVE STANDARDIZED ALL OF OUR PROCESSES:

Picking of the cherries at the correct ripe level
Fermentation process based on the Brix measurement
Stabilization at the control temperature warehouse
The most detailed mill process

Q. How does this type of auction work?

A. The most important part of any auction is the bidding. Specialty coffee auctions work as a 'Helmsman' style auction also known as multi-unit. It works like this:

  • Open bidding starts and continues on all lots simultaneously until each and every lot has received an initial bid.
  • As soon as each lot has received a bid, the auction clock for each lot, starts ticking down from 3 minutes towards zero.
  • Every time a bid is placed, the clock resets to 3 minutes remaining.
  • Once the clock reaches zero, the auction is over and the winners are declared.

This means the full value is achieved for each and every coffee in the auction. This is because the outcome for each coffee is tied to the outcome of the auction as a whole. The more people bid, the more the coffees remain available across the whole auction. This means the producers will receive good value for their coffee and we will all contribute to the sustainability of their farming.

Q. How do I place bids in the auction?

A. Bids can be made in one of three ways:

  • Next Suggested Increment: Click the "Bid" button, then "Confirm" to bid at the next increment.
  • Higher Amount: Enter an amount higher than the current increment in the text box, click "Bid", and then "Confirm".
  • Auto Bidding: Set a maximum amount you are willing to spend. The system will automatically bid on your behalf up to this amount. If the bidding exceeds your set amount, you will need to place another auto-bid to continue.
Q. What happens after I win a lot?

A. Payment for auction lots is due in full within 15 days after the auction date. Please ensure you are familiar with the Terms & Conditions you agree to when registering for the auction.

If the winning bidder does not pay within this time, the lot will be offered to the second-highest bidder.

After the auction closes, we will contact you to arrange payment, contracts, and shipping. Once agreed upon, payment can be made via bank or wire transfer. Other options are available and can be discussed as needed.

For destinations not served by our certified coffee importers, full payment is required before the coffee leaves the country of origin.
